Seto Machindranath Jatra is one of the most significant and spiritually rich festivals celebrated in Kathmandu. Dedicated to Seto Machindranath, also known as Janabaha Dyo, this festival reflects a deep harmony between Hindu and Buddhist traditions in the Kathmandu Valley.
The highlight of the festival is the grand chariot procession that moves through the historic streets of the city, including Indra Chowk, Asan Bazaar, and Hanuman Dhoka. Devotees pull the towering wooden chariot while offering prayers for peace, prosperity, and rainfall.
The festival begins from Janabaha Temple, where the deity resides, and continues for several days, drawing massive crowds of locals and visitors. One of the most unique aspects is the participation of the Living Goddess Kumari, who blesses devotees during the procession, adding a royal and sacred dimension to the celebration.
