Nepali Congress Officially Splits Following Disciplinary Action Against Top Leaders
The Nepali Congress has officially split following the Central Committee’s decision to take disciplinary action against General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma, along with Joint General Secretary Farmullah Mansur, who belong to the Special General Convention faction. Despite several rounds of talks between the Deuba faction and the Special General Convention group, no consensus could be reached. The party was ultimately pushed toward division after its leadership failed to address long-standing demands for leadership change and organizational reform. The Deuba-led faction has imposed a five-year disciplinary action on the leaders, while the rival group has already initiated the process of selecting Gagan Thapa as party president, arguing that the party cannot face upcoming elections under the current leadership. The standoff ended in a formal split when Sher Bahadur Deuba refused to step down. Kathmandu, Nepal — January 14, 2026.
