The Khukuri That Defines Bhojpur A Story of Tradition, Craftsmanship, and Generational Legacy

The hilly district of Bhojpur in eastern Nepal has long been renowned for its centuries-old tradition of khukuri making, a craft carefully preserved by the Damai (Vishwakarma) community across generations. Even today, the art continues with the same dedication, patience, and skill, as glowing iron is shaped into powerful blades through intense heat and rhythmic hammering in local forges. Bhojpure khukuris, made using locally sourced raw materials, are widely admired for their strength, balance, and sharpness, earning recognition both within Nepal and abroad. The process—from shaping the blade and sharpening to fitting the handle and final polishing—can take several hours or even days for a single khukuri, reflecting the artisans’ deep commitment to quality and tradition. पूर्वी नेपालको पहाडी जिल्ला भोजपुर सदियौँदेखि खुकुरी बनाउने सीप र परम्पराका लागि परिचित छ। यहाँका दमाइँ (विश्वकर्मा) समुदायले पुस्तौँदेखि जगेर्ना गर्दै आएको खुकुरी निर्माण कला आज पनि उस्तै मेहनत, धैर्य र निपुणताका साथ अघि बढिरहेको छ। आगोको ताप, हथौडाको चोट र फलामको स्वरूप बदलिँदै खुकुरी बन्ने दृश्य भोजपुरका भट्टीहरूमा दैनिक देखिन्छ।
स्थानीय कच्चा पदार्थ प्रयोग गरी बनाइने भोजपुरे खुकुरी आफ्नो मजबुती, सन्तुलन र धारका कारण देश–विदेशमा चर्चित छ। अनुभवी कालिगढहरूले फलाम तताएर पटक–पटक हथौडाले पिट्दै ब्लेडको आकार दिन्छन्। त्यसपछि धार लगाउने, मुडा (ह्यान्डल) जडान गर्ने र अन्तिम चमक दिने काम हुन्छ। एउटा खुकुरी तयार हुन घण्टौँदेखि दिनसम्म लाग्न सक्छ।
