Red-headed Vulture सुन गिद्द
The Red-headed Vulture (Sarcogyps calvus), the Indian Black vulture, Asian King Vulture or Pondicherry vulture, is a critically endangered species native to South Asia. It is characterized by its bald, reddish head, black plumage, and broad wings. Once widespread, its population has declined sharply due to habitat loss, food scarcity, and poisoning from veterinary drugs like diclofenac in cattle carcasses. This scavenger plays a vital ecological role by consuming animal remains, preventing the spread of diseases. Red-headed vultures inhabit open areas, forests, and wetlands, primarily feeding on carrion. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, captive breeding, and banning harmful drugs.
