Himalayan Griffon हिमाली गिद्द

The Himalayan griffon (Gyps himalayensis) is a large Old World vulture native to the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. Among the largest vultures, it has a wingspan of up to 3 meters and a creamy-white body with dark flight feathers. Adapted to high altitudes, it soars effortlessly over rugged terrains, often above 4,000 meters. This scavenger feeds primarily on carrion, playing a critical role in the ecosystem by cleaning up animal remains. While its population is relatively stable, threats include habitat loss, food scarcity, and poisoning from veterinary drugs like diclofenac. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and awareness campaigns.
