Halesi Mahadev An Ancient Sacred Cave Shrine of Hindu and Buddhist Faith

Thousands of people visit the famous Halesi Mahadev, located in Khotang District, every day for worship. The temple is situated inside a natural cave in a remote hilly region, and it is believed to have existed for over 6,000 years.

According to legend, Lord Shiva came to this place to hide from the demon Bhasmasur. It is said that Lord Shiva killed the demon at this very site. With the clever assistance of Lord Vishnu, after the demon was slain, Shiva and his wife Parvati made these caves their abode. Visiting Halesi Mahadev is also considered sacred for followers of Buddhism.

Buddhist devotees believe that Guru Padmasambhava, the Second Buddha, meditated here for three months. There are three caves at the top of the hill, which are believed to represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. Many Hindu and Buddhist devotees visit this place during festivals such as Shivaratri, Ram Navami, and Ganesh Chaturthi. This area lies between the sacred rivers Dudh Koshi to the east and Sunkoshi in Nepal.

खोटाङ जिल्लामा रहेको प्रसिद्ध हलेशी महादेवको दर्शन गर्न दैनिक हजारौंको संख्यामा मानिसहरू आउने गरेका छन् । दुर्गम पहाडी क्षेत्रमा रहेको प्राकृतिक गुफामा रहेको छ र यो मन्दिर ६००० वर्षदेखि अस्तित्वमा रहेको विश्वास गरिन्छ।

लोककथन अनुसार भगवान शिव भस्मासुर राक्षसबाट लुक्न त्यस ठाउँमा आएका थिए। भगवान शिवले त्यही ठाउँमा राक्षसलाई मारे। भगवान विष्णुको धूर्त मनको सहयोगमा राक्षसको वध भएपछि, शिवले आफ्नी पत्नी पार्वतीसँग मिलेर यी गुफाहरूलाई आफ्नो बासस्थान बनाए। हलेसी महादेवको भ्रमण बौद्ध धर्मावलम्बीहरूको लागि पनि एक पवित्र स्थल हो।

बौद्ध धर्मावलम्बीहरू गुरू पध्मसम्भव दोस्रो बुद्धले यहाँ तीन महिना ध्यान गरेको विश्वास गर्छन् । यहांको पहाडको टुप्पोमा तीन गुफाहरू छन् जसले भगवान शिवका तीन आँखाको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्दछ। धेरै हिन्दू र बौद्ध मानिसहरू शिवरात्री, रामनवमी र गणेश चतुर्थीको समयमा यस ठाउँमा आउँछन्। यो क्षेत्र दायाँतिर पवित्र नदीहरू दूधकोशी र नेपालका ठाउँहरूमा सुनकोशीमा अवस्थित छ।
