Dhorpatan valley
Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, situated in the Dhaulagiri Himal range of western Nepal, spans Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung districts, with Putha, Churen, and Gurja Himal marking its northern boundary. Established in 1983 and gazetted in 1987, it covers 1,325 sq. km., making it Nepal’s only hunting reserve, catering to both local and international hunters seeking blue sheep and other game animals. The reserve features snow-capped peaks, altitudes ranging from 3,000m to over 7,000m, and flat meadows, known as patans, vital for wildlife. Divided into six hunting blocks, it is surrounded by villages except to the north, with locals relying on the reserve for timber, fuelwood, and pasture. Annually, over 80,000 livestock graze here from February to October. The diverse cultural mix includes Magar, Thakali, and Gurung communities, reflecting a blend of traditions.
