Blackbuck(कृष्णसार), Krishnasaar Conservation Area in Khairapur, Bardia district
The Blackbuck (Antelope cervicapra) is a species of antelope native to the Indian subcontinent, known for its striking black and white coat and distinctive spiraled horns in males. These herbivores are agile runners, often found in grasslands and open plains. Conservation efforts are crucial to safeguard the Blackbuck population, as they face threats from habitat loss and hunting.
In 2009, Nepal declared the 16.95 sq. km Krishnasaar Conservation Area in Khairapur, Bardia district, marking the first organized effort to conserve the endangered Blackbuck. The Blackbuck population, which had declined to 9 in 1975 due to habitat loss, degradation, and anthropogenic interferences, currently exceeds 200 in Krishnasaar Conservation Area.
