Dattatreya Temple, Bhaktapur

Dattatreya is a deity that represents the combined essence of the gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, often depicted with three heads, each symbolizing one of these deities. The Dattatreya Temple in Bhaktapur, flanked by statues of Malla wrestlers similar to those at Nyatapola Temple, draws crowds during festivals like the Monday of Shrawan, the Wednesday of Poush, and Teej. It is also believed to have healing powers, particularly for speech disorders. During the Gaijatra festival, the Dattatreya idol, symbolizing the unity of the three gods, is paraded around the city.

Situated at the eastern end of Tachupal Tole, the Dattatreya Temple is a distinctive mandala-style structure and the only temple in Nepal dedicated to Dattatreya. Built in 1427, it is thought to have been constructed using timber from a single tree, with a slightly mismatched porch added later. The three-story temple, set on a brick and terracotta base, is adorned with intricate carvings, including both erotic and humorous depictions.
