Balkumari Temple, Madhyapur Thimi
The Balkumari Temple (Kwalakhu Dyo) holds immense historical and cultural significance. It is located on the main road at Kwalakhu Tole in Thimi, Madhyapur Thimi municipality-4. This temple stands as one of the most ancient and revered heritages in the Thimi area, predating Nepal Sambat (NS) 600 (1480 AD).
The temple showcases a magnificent Pagoda-style architecture with three storeys facing north. Its roofs are adorned with gold-coated copper plates, adding to its splendor. Within the sacred inner sanctum, known as the Garbhagriha, resides the divine statue of Goddess Balkumari. Adjacent to the temple, a statue of a peacock, representing Balkumari’s vehicle, is also installed, facing south.
The local people of Thimi hold this temple in high regard, considering it the primary deity of the region. The temple witnesses grand worship ceremonies and attracts a large number of devotees, particularly during the Bada Dashain and Biska Jatra festivals. It is regarded as one of the four Kumaris (living goddesses) in the Kathmandu Valley.
