Ancient Thecho Navadurga Dance Performed at Mul Chowk, Patan Durbar Square

An ancient Thecho Navadurga dance troupe from Lalitpur performed their sacred ritual at Mu Chwo (Mul Chowk) in Patan Durbar Square.

The Thecho Navadurga dance, an integral part of the Dashain festival, takes place twice — during Bijaya Dashami and Kojagrat Purnima. The devgans (ritual performers) carry the Mu Dya (main deity), Mukundo (sacred mask), Kalevar (ritual attire), along with traditional jewellery and Kharpan (ceremonial dagger) from the deity’s home in Thecho to the performance site.

The Thecho Navadurga Naach is a mesmerizing Newar cultural tradition, deeply rooted in spirituality and community heritage. Performed during major festivals such as Dashain and Yomari Purnima, it honors the nine deities — the Astamatrika goddesses, along with Ganesh and Bhairav. The dance beautifully intertwines devotion, artistry, and identity, preserving one of the Kathmandu Valley’s most sacred living traditions. Lalitpur, 7 October 2025
