Bhawani, she plays a central role in the spiritual identity of Bhaktapur’s historic Durbar Square. Unlike the more secluded Royal Kumari of Kathmandu, the Bhaktapur Kumari follows a tradition that allows for a more integrated lifestyle, enabling her to attend local schools and reside with her family while maintaining her divine status. Selected from the Shakya or Bajracharya clans based on strict physical and spiritual criteria, her tenure lasts until she reaches puberty. During the major festival of Dashain (Mohani), she is the focal point of intense devotion, drawing pilgrims to the Kumari Ghar to receive blessings. This unique blend of ancient mysticism and modern normalcy makes the Bhaktapur Kumari a fascinating symbol of Nepal’s living heritage and religious syncretism.
