Bhaila Pyakhan of Madhyapur Thimi, 2083
Madhyapur Thimi, a historic city in the Kathmandu Valley, is renowned for its rich Newari culture, traditional festivals, and unique dances. Among these cultural celebrations, Bhaila Pyakhan (भैलः), also known...
as Bhairab Naach, holds special religious and cultural significance.
Bhaila Pyakhan is performed for four days, beginning the day after the Gaijatra Festival. The performance features five figures representing deities: one Jyapugaa, portrayed by a child artist, two Bhailas, and two Daangis.
The dance is accompanied by traditional Newari musical instruments, including Dhaa, Bhusya, Mahaali, and Ponga. During the performance, adult dancers may begin to tremble or shiver, which local beliefs associate with divine influence. This trance-like experience reflects the community’s deep spiritual devotion and respect for tradition.
More than a traditional dance, Bhaila Pyakhan represents the living cultural heritage of Madhyapur Thimi. It brings the community together, preserves ancestral traditions, and passes Newari cultural values to younger generations. For visitors exploring the traditional festivals of Nepal, Bhaila Pyakhan offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious beliefs, music, and cultural identity of the Kathmandu Valley.
